This was quite a lovely little place and far more than the pub with rooms, which is what i foolishly was expecting. The room was really quite impressive, with a very comfortable bed, great bathroom, generously provisioned tea & coffee tray and truly impressive tv. I did not use the later but was definitely more than suitable for use relaxing in bed without the need for binos; definitely not your normal office monitor bolted to the wall type job. Whilst there wasn't an iron in the room one was provided with ironing board when I requested. The hotel restaurant/bar was well lit and welcoming, and I had a lovely evening meal and a local ale. Really far better than my wildest expectations and I can thoroughly recommend the pad thai which had quite a good zing whilst keeping its flavour; really very tasty. I had to leave before the included breakfast start time and so i can't comment on that, albeit not for the want of the alternatives offered by staff; I just wanted to grab an extra few more minutes of shut eye. Also for such a small village location i was surprised to see 2x EV charge points directly opposite the hotel. I don't have an EV but they both looked serviceable and with good access and probably more importantly not occupied by a gas gusler.

We had a wonderful stay at The Bowes Hotel. Everything was very cosy and friendly. Our room was comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated, had a private bathroom, and looked over the small town street. At the pub saloon, we had the opportunity to witness the town life, including folks playing billiards and a couple throwing darts. We don’t have a car, so Ian, the owner, graciously drove us twice to locations nearby that we wanted to visit, and even took us to an elevated look-out to see the whole of the Vindolanda Roman fort (one of the reasons why we went there) from above. We wouldn’t have found this spot otherwise. Catherine prepared our delicious buffet breakfast every morning, conversed with us, arranged for us to be taken places by Ian, and even took special food requests from us. All in all, we highly recommend The Bowes Hotel!!

Lovely hosts and staff. Open plan eating and bar area with real coal/log fire. A obvious community asset welcoming young and old alike. Good range on the food menu (Thai curries and traditional meals - fish, pies & chips etc.). Excellent cooked breakfast. Village is off the main road so the road outside is quiet. There was plenty of kerb space to park on the road - and there are a couple of parking places over the road (2 reserved for EV's). Convenient bus stop outside for travel to Hexham or Carkisle in the other direction.

* All the staff were superb, friendly and helpful - the cool Bar Man, the receptionist/waitress, the lovely cleaning ladies, the handyman, the cook .... and the very kind Owner Man. * Very comfortable guest room and common areas * Great restaurant/bar meal offerings and drinks * Not the most polished, but the most authentic and the best welcoming, laid-back vibe * Well worth coming in off the Wall walk for * Altogether this hotel is the best one I stayed at on my 2 week Hadrian's Wall / Coast-to-coast walk across England

First, the bed and pillows were maybe the softest, most comfortable I've ever experienced. Really. Next, the staff was amazing: friendly, congenial, informative, caring and responsive. Also, the bathroom and shower were first rate... best of our trip. The shower water always came out hot and strong! Also, the place was so very, very quiet. Lastly, the food served at the downstairs restaurant was really, truly good. We were so impressed with the Sauteed Mushrooms in Garlic Sauce on Chibatta... and the Sticky Toffee Pudding.
